  • Quick update!

My brain might explode or implode!  Study break?  Yesss?  System error memory dump!  idk.  Organic chem sort of does this to me!  No seriously, some of it is making more sense to me now though.  Or maybe not, but rather I find the benzene stuff somewhat interesting, and I have no idea why.  But that's good, more interest = easier to study.  But a lot of the other stuff (anything related to nucleophiles, etc.) pretty much don't interest me.  Ahhhhhh!

Anyway, had a good week last week, can't really remember most of it since I didn't write (yeah, talk about memory fail).  But these are a few highlights:

Wednesday night--kayaking was canceled :[, but for my Alternative Spring Break we're gonna be camping, so they wanted to have a little workshop to show us how to cook..!  Quite informative, and the quesadillas made were amazing!  I hope I get to help out with cooking on the trip...I'm not good at it, but I love cooking.

Thurs--Went to MOSI (Museum of Science & Industry) to attend a lecture of Neil deGrasse Tyson...he was the gentleman who removed Pluto from the Museum in NYC :[, but I'll forgive him a little since he delivered such a great lecture.  I was a little disappointed that he was so general, but maybe that was a blessing in disguise  If he talked too much about how Pluto didn't deserve to be a planet, I might have gotten angry.  Hehe ;) .  Half kidding.  I'm a little too sentimental.  The scientist in me agrees, but the kid in me doesn't.  Here are a few pictures I took with my cell:

    tyson

He was talking about the area in Ytterby in Sweden and how uncreative they were with naming their elements...

    vegas

Here he was talking about how he was at a convention for physicist in Vegas, but there was so little gambling.  "There's this quote, 'Lottery is the tax of the poor', but really it's just the tax of those poor with mathematics...".  He said the physics convention wasn't invited back to Vegas.  Probably just jesting :], but it'd be funny if it was true...

Fri--went with Mellanie to lecture about dark matter.  It was really unfortunate...I got really drowsy early during the lecture, and so I missed a lot of what the lecturer was saying.  Thus when I woke up I had no idea what he was talking about.  But apparently even amongst those who were listening, a lot didn't have a clue.  -_-'.  It was really cute seeing how excited he was about presenting his material, but it was really frustrating having to sit through a lecture that was completely over my head.  I guess the guy was from Harvard and forgot how to simplify things for the hoi polloi, considering he specializes on physics related stuff. O_o.  But he mentioned a Fermi telescope that didn't really have a window to allow things to enter, but somehow it gets pictures of things.  It confused me but sounded cool [?].  Anyways, we went to Chipotle afterward since we were so hungry!  Then after stuffing our faces we went to  Kalesia (bubble tea!) and played Jenga/constructed things with blocks afterward.  Then once it got dark we drove to the parking lot of MOSI to work on our astronomy project (draw constellations as we see them; find 2 planets--mark them on planishpere.  Phase of the moon + mark on planisphere. + Draw polestar and Casseiopeia + Big dipper + talk about visibility and stuffs).  :)   Then watched a super confusing movie with my roommate.  I can't disclose the title right now because it is still a surprise for some of my other friends, but one of them might see this, so I can't let her know...heh heh.  But seriously, I don't know if I'm just dumb, or if the movie was that confusing.  I've never sat through 77 minutes of a movie and not know exactly what was going on.  Even after reading it's article on Wikipedia I was still a bit confused.  Oooh, fail.  I'll explain this later...it'll make sense, maybe.

Sat--Chem review session confused me more than it helped me.  Ugh, fail.  :[, then I studied for a while and stopped by XZ *briefly*.  Whoosh showed me this terrible magic trick :P   I'm not gonna elaborate because it'll reveal a semi-weakness of mine!  Made pizza afterwards:

Easy meal for poor college student/busy person: premade pizza dough, spaghetti sauce spinach:
    IMG_1614 + cheese + pine nuts + bacon + toasted =IMG_1616
Oh yay.  And just for Whoosh:

    IMG_1620

Sorry I couldn't make the n_n face! I just can't get my eyes to bend that way.  Lol. Guess my camera had too long of an exposure...I didn't photoshop it at all.  O_o.  But I guess anyone holding out/offering food would look pretty sweet, yeah?

Sunday--Study study study.  Parents called...they're so cute + caring.  I'm grateful to have such wonderful parents, even if sometimes I'm so grouchy or stressed out.  They're pretty patient and reasonable :].  I wasn't grouchy on the phone, that was just a side comment.  I kinda had to use the bathroom though, so I really wanted to get off the phone...but I didn't want to tell them I'd call them back, because then they'd probably just stop talking about what they were talking about and then just tell me not to worry about it and tell me to just go study.  Lol, so I don't know if I sounded impatient towards the end, but it was just I needed to go, but I'm not up for bathroom + phone.  (LOL, but that reminds me of a David Sedaris passage, "Put a Lid on It"...omg, it's hilarious).  Studied more, did laundry (yay, fresh laundry!  Underwear = limiting reagent...though I'm going home soon, had to do my laundry anyways!).

Ooops, run on thoughts!  Short entry became long entry. O_O

Oh, and side note, a few people asked how I made the cards:

    IMG_1517

It's this technique called embossing.  What I do is use a marker with a sticky glue like fluid in it.  And then I use embossing powder and shake off or brush off the excess (I use a blush brush, since I rarely wear blush.).  Then I apply heat, and voila:

    !

    Monday--haven't done anything yet, but...

    Happy Birthday, Roadlesstaken!

  • sounds like you had a productive week :) ! the pizza looks delicious. n_n hehe

  • Wow, that pizza looks pretty thick 0_0 . Thanks for the eParty-hat! Creative!

  • yea the pizza looks goood.hmm i wanna try your embossing technique. but seriously i'm so clumsy i'll probably make such a mess. wahaha we're learning Organic chem in ib chem now. i like it better than acids and bases though. totally didn't get that unit. but again what we're learning is so rudimentary compared to college level science..

  • Study breaks (i.e. Xanga breaks) are always needed! I'm happy you took one to update hehe.

Your pizza looks delicious! Spinach pizza sounds very yummy :D Last summer, my community service club held a small, weekly cooking clinic called Life Beyond Ramen (haha catered to poor, busy college students like us) and we all learned how to make delicious food. One of the sessions was devoted to pizza! I think my love for pizza grew when I became a TMNT fan as a kid because that is all the Turtles would eat...pizza, pizza, pizza! I think in the first TMNT movie, Michaelangelo's first words were PIZZA lol. The Turtles ate really weird pizza toppings though, I'm not sure if I'd ever try the kinds of pizzas they ate, maybe one day if I am feeling adventurous hehe.

Cassiopeia! I first heard of it in one of my favorite movies--Serendipity!

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=opioRM3JwiE

"A long time ago in Ethiopia, there was this queen named Cassiopeia who thought she was the most beautiful woman in the entire world, and there wasn't anybody in the kingdom who wasn't offended by this woman's relentless vanity. And then one day, she really screwed up and offended the gods. I don't remember what she did and I don't remember who she offended. But it was bad. She crossed the line. But anyway, Poseidon, the sea god, punished Cassiopeia by placing her in the heavens upside down on her throne, stuck for eternity with her skirt around her shoulders and all the blood rushing to her head. And now she's just a constellation in the sky, a bunch of English freckles
in the shape of a throne. So she made one tragic mistake. And paid for eternity."

I wonder if this is the accepted story behind Cassiopeia.

Hehe I think you should have marched straight up to the front of the lecture and demanded that Pluto be made a planet again! (: (: (:

Well, good luck with your exam tomorrow. I am sure you will do a terrific job, or as the goose from Charlotte's Web says (in spelling terrific) T-DOUBLE E-DOUBLE R-DOUBLE I-DOUBLE F-DOUBLE I-DOUBLE C-C-C or Tteerriiffiicccccc!!! I know you will do a Tteerriiffiicccccc job on your exam...no, a starrific job!!! (:

  • Thank you Melinda for your concerns about the storm and flood in France . We have not be affected by it. It was on the West coast where there has been damages and victims . We live in northen France and we had only a strong wind .
I am amazed by your week . you don' t stop and you excell in chemistry and astronomy and what else . Once a day  would you be able to tell me what are your studies and what is the level ?
I liked your enthousiasm for the Benzen molecule . It is true the benzen nucleus interfers in many organic molecules . But I hope you don' t use this product in lab manips . vVry dangerous even if in the past I used it..... But the knowledges were less advanced .
You are so nice on the picture offering a pizza to all of the Xangans .
     Lucky parents !

    In friendship
    Michel

ps : I am not sure of my English .

  • Wow that lecture hall looks sooooo cool!!! The one I go to doesn't look nearly as big, it only holds around 120 people.

"It was really unfortunate...I got really drowsy early during the lecture, and so I missed a lot of what the lecturer was saying. Thus when I woke up I had no idea what he was talking about." Couldn't relate more. I hate when I kinda doze off for 1 minute, then he's just rubbing out the notes that I was supposed to copy down, then I'll be lost for the rest of the lecture with very broken notes ^^;;.

:O my magic trick was not terrible!! Time travel is pretty impressive I think!! =P.

Mmmmm your pizza looks really yummy ^_^! I cooked rice with Egg+Tomatoes, which tasted really yummy but looked really kinda horrible (very horrible), so I didn't take a picture ^^;;. I think I can kinda see a n_n face on the pizza...but maybe I'm just imagining things ^^;;. :O you look really cute though ^_^!! "But I guess anyone holding out/offering food would look pretty sweet, yeah?" Erm...I'm guessing you ate it...offering it then eating it is mean if I'm never going to get some :( !!!

"Underwear = limiting reagent" LOL that cracked me up XP, I never thought of my underwear and socks as limiting reagents before...hahahaha...all work and no play makes Melinda a very geeky girl? XP.

Ohhh that's how you made the cards! I thought you used a glitter pen hehe!!! The cards are really pretty though ^_^ I stuck them up on my wall :) . Wish you luck with your exam!

  • So that's how you made the cards!...sucha  neat trick.

You seem to go to so many fun lectures...I'm jealous :X

  • If anyone asks me (not that they ever do), I tell them that Pluto is a planet. I understand the IAU's reasoning behind their definition of planet, and I don't like it. So when I use the word planet, it includes Pluto.

  • Wow, you went to a ton of lectures-were they for astronomy class or for funsies? and yay for learning how to cook! Did you make the pizza dough yourself?? I've only made dough once and by that, I mean I added flour when my aunt was kneading the dough :P

  • Study breaks are good, and that pizza thingy looks really good.

Hope your brain lasts all the studying! God bless.

  • Mmmmm... pizza. Let that brain relax after all that studying. If it was me, I'll explode. :)

  • Hey, how'd your exam go? Hope it went well! ^_^

  • Finally found this place. It kind of took me a while.

  • @whoosh90 - omg, it was an epic fail -_-'!!! I was only 1 pt above average...guess it's better than being below average :...mehhhh. Hey! I might be able to get on XZ tonight, or at least AIM when I get back to Tampa! (o:

  • @phosphor_stars -

Awwwwh don't worry that's not too bad! (Mine were below average *twitch twitch* XP.) :O that'd be awesome ^_^!! Come on aim :D I'm not always on XZ. I'm out playing badminton from 7-10 tonight though which is...2-5pm your time, but I'll be back by equivalent of 5.30pm your time so maybe we can chat tonight :D !

  • @whoosh90 -  D: Ugh, examssss! :[[[[
Okay! Good luck with badminton! I'll probably be on a little later than that--I'm home right now, and it's a 1.5 hour drive back, but I wanna spend time with my family, so I'm prob not gonna leave home until maybe 5 or 6 my time; not sure how late you're up? Lol (:

  • @phosphor_stars -

Ohhhh right!! That's nice then :) I love going home, can't wait till I go back again!! Should be soon though ^_^. Hmm, if you're sure you'll come on then I'll wait up for you ^^. That'd be like...say you leave at 6, then you'll be back around half 7 which is half 12?

  • @whoosh90 -  I'll leave you a message before I leave! That way you'll know what time I'm leaving! Don't worry, if it's super late, then I'll catch you after I get back n_n.

  • @phosphor_stars -

Oh okay that's a good idea :) . NO YOU CAN NEVER CATCH ME!!! T____T *runs around flailing*

  • Premade dough or not, your pizza looks delicious :) It seems to have risen well.

Embossing powder is very cool. The first time I saw it working, I was tripping out at how neat it was.

  • @MomoLikesChoco - Thanks! n_n! Productive weeks make me happy! But I guess productive also = exhausting! D:! Have a nice week! Yay, 2 holidays in 1 week! :) And then spring starts!

@Roadlesstaken - Haha, yeah, it was a really thick pizza. I try to flatten the dough, but it always seems to rip when I try to spread it out D:! I meant to do something more for your birthday, but I had an exam on that day, so I didn't have time D: Sorry I only had a eParty hat for now!

@sunday_dreams - haha, thanks n_n--the pizza was pretty good, albeit thick!

I'm sure you could manage embossing! It's pretty much the same as sand art (glue+sand), except you have to apply a little heat n_n.

Chem, ewwww D: ! Actually, some of it is really interesting, even if it is difficult and annoying. I'm not sure which I like better--gen chem or organic; I did a lot better in gen chem, probably because it had more math. As a side note, a lot of the little chemistry (all my teacher wanted to do was "food labs" aka bring food in and chill...fun but not very helpful to learning XD) I did learn in HS did appear in gen chem. at approximately the same level. :D Guess it also depends on what school you go to :O/the professor(s).

  • @cal_islander - Life beyond Ramen? That sounds great...I wish all college would have a quick cooking crash course D: I feel like I cook the same stuff all the time; granted it is tasty (pesto+gnocci), I still get tired of it D:...don't want to tire of good food!

That story of Cassiopeia is the same one he told us in my astronomy class, and probably the same one I read in the book Mythology (Edith Hamilton!)...I loved that book as a kid, but haven't read it in ages O_O. Time time! D: Always short of time X(!

Haha, they'd probably call security on me! XD Lol, that'd be embarrassing. "College kid detained for Attacking Pluto-demoter"...if demoter was a word.

Haha, thanks for you confidence in me; unfortunately I completely bombed that one -_-'...seems to happen everytime in organic D:, but I guess I'll just work harder in my other classes to try to make up for it. I'm just glad I at least think it is interesting now, so studying doesn't seem as exhausting. D:

@phantomFive - I think it's funny how long it took them to define planet and how hazy the idea still is. I watched this film, I think "Bye Bye Planet Pluto" or something like that; I mean there should be a cut off point; I guess kids in the past might have considered asteroids like Ceres and Pallas (etc.) planets too. D: It'd be confusing to have the numbers keep changing. And I sorta wish they would name the new planets/things after Roman/Greek mythology still instead of completely random. :O

@JabezPrayer2009 - Thanks! n_n..study breaks always seem nice, except when I have to remind myself to get back to work! ;)

  • @phosphor_stars -

Haha if you ever go to jail for promoting the come back of Pluto as a planet, I'll bail you out. I promise!

    <3 Hedwiggles

  • @cal_islander -

LOL or I might just end up in jail with you haha. Probably wouldn't make me as useful as being able to bail you out or help you escape ;) hehe :X

  • ohay you're pretty
