  • Walking contradiction?

(good song by Green Day btw)

So the other day when I was driving, at a red light I saw a man holding a sign..he was selling bottles of water for $1 to raise money for a girl needing marrow transplant. So I decided I could help out & plus I need to try to drink more to stay hydrated/try not to kill my kidneys. However I got distracted and didn't get around to drinking the water...

Later outside the Asian market, a poor/hungry man asked me if I could spare a dollar so he could eat. I asked him to wait a moment and went to my car. I offered him a box of Teddy Grams. But he told me he couldn't eat those (and then proceeded to show me he was missing a bunch of teeth). So I told him I could only offer him a bottle of water since I don't believe in giving away money like that (except to reputable sources). He thanked me and accepted the water. But that led me to wonder about the system and my overall sense of trust/occasional lack thereof. I mean what made the man with the sign more trustworthy than the other?

I'll finish my thought later...my iPod batteries are low. And I accidentally leechblocked xanga so I guess I'll be back later either when I recharge batteries or Saturday when the block let's up! Until the see ya! Will still read subs in inbox!

  • Oh, poor guy. Reminds me of the time a homeless guy snuck into my car. Nice of you to help them out, though.

  • well look at it this way... you helped two people

  • The guy with a sign, you can't tell if he's genuine or not so the right thing to do would be to be simple-minded and try to help? As for the beggar, I never give them cash either, but I'll always offer to go into the shop and buy them something to eat. Which is kinda stupid seeing as in the UK they'd get benefits anyways >_<;; but...bleh.

  • That is really interesting, but at least you helped! I don't really stop for people when I'm driving but when people approach me I tend to give them something. Maybe because it's harder to ignore when they are in front of you?

aghh leechblock hahah-I guess I should exercise self-control since classes started...I'll start next week!

  • By the way, good luck on the stuff you have to do

  • @phantomFive - Oh my! That sounds kinda scary...O_O! Were you able to help out at all? I think if that happened I'd be too freaked out to be thoughtful though. O_o

    &Thanks! :)

@sonychak -  Yeah :) , two for one! :D Kinda reminds me of the penny project (never done it before, but heard a lot about it) where they see what they can trade for a penny?

@whoosh90 -  Lol, aww, you're so nice :) . Maybe I should've offered him some of the tofu I bought. That stuff is pretty soft (and filling :D !)

  • @shortstuff3157 -  Ahahahaha, I keep telling myself that too (I'll start...next week). Fortunately we have a few more days of slacking courtesy of the long weekend...wish we could have long weekends more often :[...& hope you're enjoying yours? :D ?! I think I'm enabling leechblock again soon to allot me 30 minutes a day. Soon..O_o. LOL!

  • @phosphor_stars -

Mmmmm tofu nomnomnom. Some beggars don't really lack money though, I can tell from what they ask for. Some ask for biscuits, any kind, which is fair enough, cos biscuits last. They're a good choice. Some ask for sandwiches though, which is stupid, they're obviously not poor. If they were they'd ask for bread + filling seperately, which would be much cheaper.

  • Yeah, I kicked him out. He was smoking, and at that moment I was feeling very selfish and not thinking about his needs at all. He could have slept on the pavement for all I cared.
