  • Meteor Shower

The most recent shower was the Geminid Shower that peaked on the 14th (wee hours of yesterday).  Named because most of the meteors should have appeared near the Gemini constellation:

I sat outside with my sister, her friend David, and my brother for about half an hour maybe?  My sense of time is pretty bad, so that number is just kind of out there.  We saw approximately 3 meteors (approximately since there were more but we didn't all see the same ones).  It was kind of cool and kind of annoying watching that night since it was cloudy.  However, there were patches of clear sky that would occasionally waft by and during those windows of opportunity (har har) we saw those meteors.  Of course, I made a few wishes :) .

I went out for a few minutes last night but didn't see any.  My dad saw a few though, though at an earlier hour. *_*

It got me thinking, it's weird to just wait there for something that might not ever show up.  And what if we don't wait enough?

    >< (seriously, xkcd is applicable to almost everything)

But anyways, back to the meteor shower--here's a picture I found on Astronomy Pic of the Day; I pasted the caption just FYI:

    Explanation:

    The Geminids are expected
to put on a good show this year.

Created as planet Earth sweeps through dusty debris from extinct
    comet Phaethon, the annual
Geminid meteor shower is predicted to peak
on December 14th, around 0510 UT (12:10am EST).

    With better
    viewing
    for northern hemisphere observers, pictures
of Geminids streaking through the night could include
wintery landscapes, like this snow-tinged image of a 2007
Geminid meteor over buttes of the
    Monument Valley region
    in the southwestern US.

The meteor streak points back to the constellation Gemini and
    the shower's radiant point,
just off the upper left edge of the scene.

Along with Rigel, the sword and belt
stars of Orion are at the
    upper right.

    Near the eastern horizon
are bright stars Procyon (left) and Sirius.

The two buttes at the far left are known as The Mittens -
clearly a reminder that if you want to watch a meteor shower on a cold
December night, wearing mittens would be a good idea.

So as much as I have not liked Facebook in the past, I am finding it to be very useful.  Now, I don't have to look up meteor shower dates, I just need to watch my feed:

makes no difference who you are! :o )

  • @jeannie_dot_com -

ah, booooooooo! Maybe next year? There's one right around Jan 3/4! Lol, starting off the New Year with wishes instead of resolutions! :O

  • Congrats Melinda for your exams that went well . I was sure.
For the meteor showers , you will be luckier next time .
But those "falling stars" are spectacular .

    In friendship

  • It's weird to just wait there for something that might not ever show up. And what if we don't wait enough?
...reminded me of a book we read...Waiting for Godot. I don't know if you read it but then these two men they're just waiting for this Godot and they don't even know who or what they are waiting for and they don't know if he's ever going to come. But in the end...they wait anyways.

  • The first frame is wrong....you shouldn't 'settle' you should decide what you want and then go out and find it. If all you do is wait, you will probably not get it

  • By the way, as for your title on your blog, it is a great Beatles song, but I think I prefer their song, "That's What I Want" ;)

  • I saw these earlier I saw the Perseid ones ^_^ first time I've ever seen a shooting star it was sooooo cool :D !!

  • this has nothing to do with your post but i just wanted to say your profile pics are awesome! :D

  • @whoosh90 -

Haha, and they're so sneaky! Sometimes when I see them I'm not sure if it was just me or if I really saw one since they're so fast! :P !

    @MomoLikesChoco -

    Thank you! n_n!

  • @sunday_dreams -

Hmm, was that a good book? I haven't read it before. What books did you have to read for IB? I know they switch it up from time to time. Most of the books I read were the same as my sister, luckily, so I didn't have to buy new books back then :D .

Junior year: Their Eyes were Watching God, Wuthering Heights, Othello, The Writing Life (<--soooo boring), The Awakening (bleh)
Senior year: 1984 (<--creepy), Wise Blood, Cyrano de Bergerac (<--my favorite!), A Doll's House, The Visit, maybe a few more?
    Any in common? :D ?

  • @phantomFive -

Yeah, I agree :) . The ideas behind the first panel might be why there are so many failed marriages X(!

Oh that song's cute! :D Haha, a lot of Beatles songs I didn't like at first but grew on my really suddenly. It's weird, but a good thing. :)

  • I also tink the third frame is wrong too, though

  • @phosphor_stars -

Pfft, I'm SURE I saw them. A lot of them though, I really can't figure out whether I saw them or not, but I'll count them anyways hahaha XD. Then again for a loooong time I couldn't see them ^^;; I kept thinking one was a shooting star...till it went on...and on...and on...while blinking...>_>;;...

  • @whoosh90 -

    Hahahhaa :D ! I'm never sure n_n! Made a ton of wishes? :D ! ?

  • @phantomFive -

    lol, no trumpets or angels?

  • Yeah, I also think 'think' should be spelled with an 'h' and not 'tink'

  • @phantomFive -

lol, typo! (: I used to drive myself crazy with those. I'm glad they have the red dashed lines now :) , except when I can think of no other alternative.

  • @phosphor_stars -

woah i can't believe you still remember! we did...11th grade: man's search for meaning, the things they carried, 1984 or brave new world, handmaid's tale, macbeth.
12th grade: hamlet, a bunch of poems (by yeats, heaney), waiting for godot, rosencrantz and guildenstern are dead, and one more play which we haven't read yet.
i really enjoyed man's search for meaning and 1984 ...the others were sort of meh but interesting.
so the only things we had in common were 1984!

  • seems you are really happy today (or yesterday, since you'll probably read this when you wake up)

  • @sunday_dreams -

Haha after writing all those papers it's hard to forget, lol. Just kidding! ;) ! They'll go away eventually, though I really liked some of them. 1984 was pretty cool but way too scary O_O! I'm surprised we have so few in common! :O! But I think my teacher said something about there being a list of books that they could do that they had to choose from, but they weren't allowed to do the same book for over X number of years (X being five maybe?? I can't really remember).

  • @phantomFive -

Lol, the day before yesterday was a bad day for me, so I was happy to be out of my slump. That's all :]

  • Glad you can be happy

  • I missed it, but glad you were able to see it :]

  • @a_drunken_cellist -

Hey, there's another one I think the 3rd/4th of January, and I hear that in Hawaii there is good stargazing opps...maybe you can catch some? (:! ?
